• 15 to Finish

UNR Academic Advising is currently pushing a campaign that encourages students to take 15 credits per semester to ensure that they graduate in four years and will save students money in the long run. Students that receive certain types of financial aid such the undergrad state access grant are required to take five classes in order to receive their money. Petitions can be made to the financial aid office. Preference will be given to students graduating this year, Level III nursing students, students with certified reduced course loads and athletes.

• Concrete canoe team wins national competition

The University of Nevada, Reno civil engineering team took home the first-place trophy in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) National Concrete Canoe Competition. According to ASCE website, UNR’s canoe, Alluvium, weighed in at 172 pounds and was 21 feet, 8 inches long.

• Rides for students

Campus Escort changed its service radius from two-miles to three-miles last semester, but wasn’t sure it was going to carry the expansion into fall 2014. According to Coordinator of Student Engagement Christopher Partridge, they are going to keep the new radius.

• Historic Halls

There were talks of demolishing Lincoln and Manzanita Hall this summer, but after receiving letters from students, alumni and community members, the buildings will stay on campus. University officials stated that the halls will no longer house students after June 2015 and will instead be be re-purposed.

• Tuition will go up next year

NSHE board voted to increase tuition on all Nevadan schools on a 7-6 decision. Students will see the difference beginning in fall 2015. Tuition will be going up four percent each year for the next four years. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the school presidents will be required to report where the extra money is used each December.
