As the University of Nevada’s campus continues to grow at alarming rates, so does the traffic congestion in the surrounding neighborhoods. This increases the importance of pedestrian safety around the university.

Since June, UNR has put policies in place concerning the operation of motorized vehicles, bicycles, skateboards and other means of transportation in order to combat growing threats to pedestrians.

Here’s what you need to know:

Motorized vehicles

Motorized vehicles on campus may be operated only on designated roadways and parking areas. The speed limit on campus roadways is 15 mph. This does not apply to registered university vehicles or motorized wheelchairs.

Motorized vehicles must park away from pedestrian walkways, ADA-access walkways and areas reserved for emergency vehicle access. Parking is also never permitted in the following areas: red-curbed or signed fire zones, disabled parking zones, loading docks or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, fire alarm boxes, building entrances or removable bollards .

Personal vehicles must be registered with Parking Services, and all drivers must follow state and local laws. If an accident occurs and an injury is reported, the accident must be reported to University Police.

Bicycles

If you would like to save money on gas and a parking pass, using a bicycle is a great way to navigate campus; however, it is required to register your bike with the university annually. A university bicycle parking permit must be displayed on the bike during all times the bike is being used on campus.

Bicycles must also abide by the 15-mph speed limit and maintain a 3-foot distance from pedestrians. Bikes are not allowed inside university buildings and may only be parked in designated areas.

Skateboards, scooters and skates

UNR’s skating policies are especially strict. Skateboards, scooters and skates are not permitted on streets designated for motorized vehicles, in parking lots, in garages or on parking ramps. The only exception is when crossing the street in a designated crosswalk.

These policies require that skaters must abide by the campus speed limit, the no-texting-and-skating rule, and the pedestrian-right-of-way rule.
