U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass spoke alongside Democratic Senate hopeful Catherine Cortez Masto on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the Lawlor Events Center at the University of Nevada, Reno. Warren emphasized the importance of electing Masto into the Senate and her denounced opponent, Republican Senate hopeful Joe Heck.
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren rallied with Democratic Senate hopeful Catherine Cortez Masto to encourage voters to get out to the polls before early voting ends on Friday. The pair targeted the policies of Masto’s opponent, Republican Joe Heck and presidential nominee Donald Trump.
They spoke alongside one another to a crowd of several hundred people Wednesday evening inside the Silver and Blue room at Lawlor Events Center on The University of Nevada, Reno campus.
The rally quickly turned negative as Masto criticized her opponent’s support for Trump and claimed that after hearing about Trump’s lewd comments about women Heck, “jumped like a rat scurrying off the side of the ship.”
“I have an opponent who, for nine months thought that Donald Trump was the best person to be president of the United States,” Masto said. “When Donald Trump was attacking POWs, when he was attacking a gold star family, my opponent, Congressmen Heck, had no problem with Donald Trump’s finger on the nuclear button. When Donald Trump was targeting Mexicans and calling them rapists and criminals, denigrating women, making fun of the disabled, my opponent had high hopes that he could be the next commander and chief.”
Warren took the stage and after stressing the importance of taking care of veterans, protecting unions, expanding social security and targeting student loan debt, she followed Masto’s harsh criticism of Heck and Trump.
“I have had it with the Donald Trumps and Joe Hecks of the world who think that it is the job of the government to help the rich and powerful get richer and more powerful,” Warren said. “No, the job of the government is to help everyone get some real opportunity.”
Warren emphasized the importance of voting Masto into the Senate by praising her for her work during the financial crisis. Warren said that in the Senate, Heck would be targeted by interest groups and lobbyists to only help wealthy Americans.
A Remington Research Group poll released Tuesday night shows Trump with a 0.5 percent lead over Clinton in Nevada.
“I think Hillary needs to find a common ground with people in Nevada, Elizabeth Warren has been labeled as a very super-progressive and so for people who are on the fence and are more conservative, she needs to appeal to those voters as well,” said Allison More, a Clinton supporter at Wednesday night’s rally.
Warren continued with her routine criticisms of Trump’s business reputation, his denial of climate change and his tendency to “bully” those who oppose him.
“He is a small insecure moneygrubber who will never be president of the United States,” Warren said.
Warren highlighted the importance of early voting to those in attendance and also encouraged people to volunteer for the Clinton and Cortez Masto campaigns during the push before Election Day.
