College of Business seeks TEDx speakers

Javier Hernandez from the College of Business student council presented to the senate about recruiting members from their respective colleges to apply to speak at the university’s TEDx program. The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 15. Speeches on all topics are welcome. If interested, students should apply at http://tinyurl.com/htpabmp. Questions should be emailed to Hernandez at jshernandex@nevada.unr.edu. The TEDx event will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union theater, located on the third floor.

Teixeira releases DACA statement

ASUN president Noah Teixeira announced that he released a statement with student leaders of other colleges around the country about President Donald Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that allows children of undocumented immigrants that were brought to the U.S. the same privileges as citizens, including the right to go to college. Teixeira encouraged the ASUN senate to push through legislation that would keep DACA students on campus.

Senators encouraged to fight hate

Dr. James Beattie, the advisor to the senate, gave a mini-lesson on how to they could fight hate on campus in addition to passing legislation. He suggested the senators should educate themselves about institutional and systematic racism, not to back away from problems that don’t affect them and pressure university administration to do more.

“One of the best ways to fight hate is through education,” said Beattie.

Martinez works toward LGBTQA+ residence floors

In his report, speaker pro tempore Anthony Martinez announced that he was working with the Residence Hall Association to create a floor in each dormitory specifically dedicated to people in the LGBTQA+ community to live. He said that the RHA has tried to push for this before, and they are learning from past mistakes in order to make the LGBTQA+ floors a reality.

Wolf shop LOOKS to text students

Senator Derek Bussman, from the College of Liberal Arts, said that the Wolf Shop is looking to create a texting service in order to contact students about textbooks and other promotions. Textbook Brokers, a direct competitor of the Wolf Shop, debuted their texting service this semester. The Wolf Shop is hoping to use the same texting channel as ASUN so they could reach more students without having to start a new account.
