Isaac Hoops/Nevada Sagebrush Former Gov. Brian Sandoval attends a press conference on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2020. Sandoval announced earlier today he tested positive for COVID-19.
Update Sept. 17, 10:50 p.m.:
Brian Sandoval, president of the University of Nevada, Reno, announced in an email sent to students on Sept. 15 he has tested positive for COVID-19.
He stated that he was tested earlier that morning after feeling mild symptoms. Sandoval said he is confident that he will make a quick recovery since he is fully vaccinated.
“Breakthrough infections tend to be mild when one is vaccinated and this is exactly what I am experiencing right now,” Sandoval said in the email. “I want to use this moment to encourage all of our students, faculty and staff to get vaccinated if you have not done so already.”
He will not return to office until he has undergone a 10-day isolation period and has been cleared by healthcare professionals.
Sandoval stopped coming to campus on Sept. 15.
Sandoval was last seen in public on Monday, Sept. 13 lighting the torch at the first Las Vegas Raiders home game, and claims to have tested negative on the previous Thursday.
“The COVID-19 vaccines are indeed doing their job,” Sandoval said in the email. “I received my COVID-19 vaccinations earlier this year and I am so grateful I did.”
Sandoval received his first COVID vaccination on Mar. 29 and his second on Apr. 19.
Kerri Garcia Hendricks, executive director of Marketing and Communications at UNR, said Sandoval started to feel symptoms on the night of Sept. 14 and got tested the following day.
“He felt overly tired, so he got tested with an abundance of caution,” said Garcia Hendricks.
