The best thing to happen during my spring break was nothing.

By that, I mean literally doing nothing.

While many of my peers were gallivanting across the country from San Diego to New Orleans, I was one of the “lucky” ones to hold it down in the 775. Sure, spending time on a beach or exploring a new city would have been awesome, but there are definitely highlights to staying in your hometown over break.

ENJOYING THE GREAT INDOORS

During the school year it’s hard to find time to take in the simpler pleasures in life, and by that, I mean taking naps. Lots and lots of naps. I’m talking about the kind of naps where you wake up and don’t know what century you’re in. Naps are the undisputed kings of the break time and if you disagree with that, then that’s your opinion — even though it’s a bad one.

When you have little schoolwork to take care of during break, you can obviously try to catch up on your New Year’s resolutions and be productive, but what kind of square wants to do that? Isn’t it way more fun to play “Madden” until your eyes are blurry and your ears are ringing from all the obscenities your middle school rivals are shouting at you from their headphones thousands of miles away? OK, maybe getting called every name in the book by an anonymous 14-year old isn’t that appealing, but it sure beats taking a midterm or writing a term paper, at least it does for me, especially when Brandon Lloyd torches their whole defense for an 80-yard touchdown.

On that note, I would also like to take this moment to pour one out for the 49ers defense. Losing Patrick Willis and Chris Borland is a big blow, but losing all those bandwagon fans might be a bigger one. Yes, I just went there.

SAMPLING THE FINEST CUISINES

Seafood, salads and beer were all the rage on my Snapchat this last week so kudos to everyone who painstakingly worked to get that beach body ready for some fun in the sun. The same could not be said of myself, but that’s not a big problem when Reno weather in springtime is about as consistent as Tony Romo is in the playoffs. So I proceeded to indulge in the most exquisite foods that Reno has to offer. From sampling the French toast at Gold Dust West to trying my first Super Burrito, my new free time was an opportunity to travel the faintly beige-colored road that is Reno food culture. For those that haven’t explored the city beyond the Keystone quadrant (McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, Wendy’s, etc.) a break where you don’t go out of town could be a perfect time to do just that.

GIVING IT THE “OL’ COLLEGE TRY”

Students will remember a variety of things about college. From your freshman orientation to your graduation in the spring or winter, there is a plethora of moments to cherish for a lifetime. For me, Spring Break 2015, aka “SB2K15,” ranked right up with the best moments of my college career. Being able to spend significantly more time with my one-eyed dog Waffles (yes, you read that correctly) and the rest of my family is something that can get swept aside pretty easily during the school year. Plus if I didn’t have time to spend with them, how would I talk them into possibly helping me pay for grad school (please mom and dad?).

All jokes aside, please make sure to embrace the down times we have left in college because sometimes it can get taken for granted.
