Staff Report
The following are letters of apology from two ASUN Senators who were censured last semester.
The first is from Jeff Dominguez who is the ASUN Senator representing the College of Science:
FROM: Senator Dominguez TO: The Nevada Sagebrush DATE: October 7, 2014
To the Students of the University of Nevada, Reno:
“I want to respond to the censure proceedings considered before Senate in late September. There is no denying that I was failing at my role as a Senator and for that I want to express my deepest apologies.
Being a student and keeping up with the duties of a senator has not been easy, but it has given me a chance to grow as a leader and an individual. Consequently, after reflecting on these last couple of weeks, I was reminded of an article that was published in the Nevada Sagebrush last year that discussed the nature of leaders and their inclination toward avoiding failure. This was prior to my election campaign but I remember reading the following:
“Along with the opportunity to lead, comes the opportunity to fail.”
The article specifically targeted a fear of publicized flaws within our student representatives. This of course would be of no surprise to anyone, as our mistakes are seen as a sign of weakness, especially in elected officials.
However, I don’t have a problem with making mistakes because at the end of the day I learn from them. I hope you will all understand that my position does not make me a flawless individual. Every student leader I work with has flaws, I’m just one of the first to get caught up in them. You shouldn’t have any worries because I’ll be the first to own up to them. Know that I strive to use my best judgment to prioritize the students of this University and will not make the same mistakes again. Nonetheless, I appreciate the oversight because I’m only human.
I hope you will all continue to trust my leadership throughout the 82nd session.”
Jeffrey Dominguez
The second is from Quinn Jonas, one of the ASUN Senators representing the College of Liberal Arts:
“To All Members of the Association,
I want to begin by apologizing for my shortcoming during my time as a Senator for the College of Liberal Arts and Chair for the Senate Committee on Public Affairs; during my term of office mistakes due to inattentiveness has caused me to fall short of the standard to which student officers should be held. My failure to hold two meetings within the allotted two week time period due to a holiday and to record the office hours I held are two mistakes I have made which caused me to fall short of my obligation to serve my constituents who put their trust in me by electing me to this office. I can do nothing more than apologies for my past failures. You have my sincerest apologies for those mistakes.
My reparations rest in the eyes of those who I have let down, my constituents and my colleagues as my mistakes have negatively impacted their ability to serve their constituents. I understand that whereas, I can only proffer my apologies for my past actions that does not suffice as a proper apology; I owe you my future actions as a promise to ensure those mistakes never happen again. I will use this as a reminder of my duty to serve this University to better the lives of students. To put in longer hours, and remember what immense trust I have been given so I can begin to earn back your faith in me as your Senator. Thank you, and I look forward to doing everything I can to better serve you in the future.
With Sincerity and Humble Apologies,
Quinn T. Jonas
Senator for the College of Liberal Arts”
