Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden spoke at Truckee Meadows Community College’s campus on Wednesday, Oct. 2. 

Biden held a rally to address the Northern Nevada community on the recent impeachment process against current U.S President Donald Trump. More than 400 individuals attended the event. 

City of Reno councilman Oscar Delgado started the night off by saying Biden is the candidate Reno needs to properly address affordable healthcare, wage increases and unification of the county. 

Delgado added that Biden, in his previous positions, has put the people first in policy making. 

“He has made government work for us,” Delgado said. 

Earlier that day, president Trump addressed Congressional Democrats over the impeachment inquiry and Biden’s involvement in Ukraine. 

The president and his lawyer have alleged when Biden was vice president he pressured the Ukrainians to force out a top prosecutor in order to derail an inquiry into a Ukrainian company that had paid his son, Hunter Biden. 

Biden addressed the crowd calling Trump “wounded” and “desperate” .

“Let me make something clear to Trump and his hatchet men and the special interests funding his attacks against me — I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said. “You’re not going to destroy me. And you’re not going to destroy my family. I don’t care how much money you spend or how dirty the attacks get.”

Since the president’s efforts to seek potentially damaging information into Biden’s connections in Ukraine, Biden explain his role related to foreign policy in Ukraine. 

Biden said his goal was to replace a Ukrainian prosecutor with and an official more committed to fighting corruption. Biden added he had support from the international community. 

“The truth doesn’t matter to Donald Trump,” Biden said. “It never has, and it never will.”  

He said the president’s actions show an abuse of power and has been the cornerstone of the Trump presidency. But, according to Biden, Trump’s actions have brought the American people together. 

Biden then focused on criticizing the Trump administration on its policies related to climate change, healthcare and immigration. 

Despite a majority of the crown reacting positively to Biden’s speech, some of those in attendance wanted to hear more on policies. 

Rallygoer Jeff Batrez expresseed he is not 100 percent decided on who to support, but attended the rally in hopes to get a better understanding of Biden’s policies. 

“I think everything needs to get talked about,” Batrez said. “I’m a teacher. Education is important. I think tackling climate change and just allowing our country to look like a beacon to the rest of the world like it should it.” 

 Melvina Petersdorf attended the rally hoping to understand what Biden’s plan is to provide affordable healthcare and medicines.  

“People are not taking their medications or they’re cutting their medication in half because they are not able to buy them,” Petersdorf said. “I have a friend who can’t even afford to buy her insulin. The drug companies here are not helping us at all. They just all want profit.” 

Biden is one of the remaining 10 democratic 2020 presidential candidates. Biden currently is leading the polls with 28.4 percent.
