New fitness center details discussed
The 84th session of the Senate of the Associated Students began with comments from Jim Fitzsimmons, the University of Nevada, Reno, director of campus recreation and wellness and the Lombardi Recreation Center. He discussed plans for the E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center. The 108,000 square-foot facility will include four floors. The first floor will contain weights and training areas, as well as administration offices and men’s, women’s and gender neutral restrooms, along with locker rooms. The second floor will have more office areas and multipurpose rooms. On the third floor will be the gymnasium, a section with cardio equipment, and another area with more strength equipment and machines. The top floor will contain the 1/8 mile running track.
Fitzsimmons told the senators that the facility plans on using some equipment from Lombardi, but also plans on purchasing several new pieces of equipment that utilize new technology for a better workout. Fitzsimmons also said campus recreation will increase their staffing size by 21 to 25 percent with the installation of the new fitness center.
The E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center will be open Jan. 16, according to Fitzsimmons. The new fitness center will be open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Resignation
Associate Justice of ASUN Judicial Council resigns
As the senate meeting continued, Speaker Noah Teixeira read the resignation letter from Associate Justice Meikin Gasuad. In his letter, Gasuad thanked ASUN for the opportunity to serve as the Associate Justice of ASUN, but said he realized ASUN has become something he does not wish to participate in.
“For my own self-health, I have decided that I no longer want to be a part of ASUN. This decision was a personal one and I wish you and the rest of ASUN luck on your pursuits. I know that ASUN will continue to work in the best interests of the student body,” Gasuad said.
Teixeira told the senators to notify their college’s constituents about the resignation and to extend the invitation out to them to run for the open position of Associate Justice.
